Ask The Vets: Volume 2

For the second installment of “Ask The Vets”, Ask The Vets at West Eugene Animal Hospital Volume 2we discuss an essential part of maintaining a healthy and happy pet, their diet.

Q. How Much Food Should I Feed My Pet?

A. Studies show that 58% of dogs and 54% of cats are obese. Pets vary not only in size and weight but in metabolisms as well. Much like people, exercise and activity play a huge part in how much food your pet should eat on a daily basis. Following the k-calories listed on your bag of pet food based on your pets goal weight is a good starting point but may need to be adjusted according to your pet’s metabolism and exercise activity.

Coming in for an exam to have your pets weight evaluated and discussing other factors such as food allergies, GI sensitivities, or other health issues such as renal failure, urinary issues, joint issues, etc can play a huge part in the type of food we may recommend your pet be started on. Call us now to schedule a visit and get your pet started on the right pet food to lead a healthy, long life.
